What Size Rug Calculator: Rules That Always Work

Living Room (What size rug for living room calculator)

Goal: anchor the seating area so everything feels connected.

  • Front-legs-on (small/medium rooms): rug slightly wider than the sofa → often 6×9, 7×10, or 8×10.
  • All-legs-on (bigger rooms): the whole seating group sits on the rug → 8×10, 9×12, or 10×14.
  • From walls: keep 12–24 in (30–60 cm) of floor showing around the rug.
  • Fast picks by sofa width (approx.):
    • ≤ 72″ → 6×9
    • 72–84″ → 7×10 or 8×10
    • Sectional / large sofas → 9×12 or 10×14

Bedroom

  • Rug reveal: aim for 18–24 in (45–60 cm) of rug around the bed for a comfy step-out.
  • Typical sizes: Queen → 8×10 (or 6×9 if tight), King → 9×12.
  • Budget option: two runners (2×7 or 2.5×8 each) on both sides.

Dining Room (Rug size for dining table calculator)

  • Keep all chair legs on the rug when pulled out.
  • Add 24 in (60 cm) beyond the tabletop on each side.

Quick dining chart

  • 4 chairs (rect. table up to ~60″) → 6×9
  • 6 chairs (~72″) → 8×10
  • 8 chairs (~96″) → 9×12
  • Round table 42–48″ → 8′ round
  • Round table 54–60″ → 9′ round

Entry & Hallway

  • Keep a 4–8 in (10–20 cm) border from walls.
  • Common runners: 2×7, 2×8, 2.5×8, 2.5×10, 3×12.

How to Calculate Rug Size (Step-by-Step)

Use this if you like the math behind the tool.

  1. Measure your room: width (W) and length (L).
  2. Choose a border you want to see from each wall (e.g., 18 in).
  3. Target rug width = W − (2 × border).
  4. Target rug length = L − (2 × border).
  5. Pick the nearest standard size that’s equal or slightly larger than your target.

Example
Room: 12′ × 16′, border: 18 in (1.5 ft)

  • Target width: 12 − (2 × 1.5) = 9 ft
  • Target length: 16 − (2 × 1.5) = 13 ft → choose 9×12 or 10×14 (size up if furniture needs it)

This is exactly what the calculator does when you choose rug size for room calculator mode.

Rug Pad Size Calculator (Grip, Safety & Comfort)

  • Make the pad 1″ shorter on all sides than the rug (subtract 2″ from rug width & length).
    • Example: 8×10 rug7’10” × 9’10” pad (94″ × 118″).
  • Trim a bit more (1.5–2″ per side) if doors or thick piles need extra clearance.

Pad types

  • Felt + rubber: best balance of cushion + anti-slip.
  • Rubber / mesh (PVC-free): thin, high grip for hard floors.
  • Felt only: cushion under heavy furniture where slipping isn’t an issue.

Our calculator’s rug pad size output applies this rule automatically.

Rug Size Calculator Square Feet (Area & Ordering)

  • Rectangle:length × width = square feet
    • 8×10 → 80 sq ft
    • 9×12 → 108 sq ft
    • 6×9 → 54 sq ft
  • Round:π × (radius²)
    • 9′ round → radius 4.5′ → ~63.6 sq ft

The tool can show square feet for any recommended size—useful for budgeting, underlay, and cleaning quotes.

Standard Sizes You’ll Actually Find In-Stock

  • Rectangle: 5×8, 6×9, 7×10, 8×10, 9×12, 10×14, 12×15
  • Round: 6′, 7′, 8′, 9′, 10′, 11′, 12′
  • Runner: 2×7, 2×8, 2.5×8, 2.5×10, 3×12

Choosing a standard size keeps costs down and delivery times short.
